Yilin Verse
外棲野鼠,與雞為伍。瘡痍不息,即去其室。
A wild rat roosts outside, keeping company with chickens. Sores and wounds unceasing, it must then leave that dwelling.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder and fire converge in Abundance, but here abundance breeds infestation. Field mice nest outside their burrows and mingle with the chickens. Sores and wounds multiply without ceasing, until one must abandon the dwelling entirely. When vermin invade domestic space, corruption has penetrated the household. The mixing of wild rodents with domestic fowl signals a breakdown of proper boundaries — disorder masquerading as cohabitation. From Abundance to Small Taming, wind above heaven gently restrains: the verse warns that small corruptions left unchecked overwhelm any system. Small Taming's discipline of 'refining civil virtue' addresses precisely this — containing minor threats before they become unmanageable plagues.
