Yilin Verse
望城抱子,見邑不殆。公孫上堂,大君歡喜。
Gazing at the city walls while holding her child; approaching the town without fear. The young lord ascends the hall; the great prince rejoices.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind upon wind transforms into mountain over fire: the Gentle becomes Grace. Gazing toward the city walls while carrying a child, one sees the settlement and knows there is no danger. A young nobleman ascends the hall, and the great lord rejoices. The verse paints a scene of safe arrival and warm reception — a mother approaching a city with confidence, a grandson presented to a delighted patriarch. From The Gentle to Grace, fire glowing beneath the mountain adorns what is solid with warmth and beauty. The gentle wind has carried this family safely home. Grace here is not superficial decoration but the radiance of a secure homecoming, where the next generation is welcomed into the hall with ceremony and joy.
