Yilin Verse
兄征東夷,弟伐遼西。大克勝還,封君河間。

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind upon wind transforms into wind over thunder: the Gentle becomes Increase. The elder brother campaigns east against the Yi barbarians; the younger brother conquers the western Liao. Both return in great triumph, and are enfeoffed as lords of Hejian. The verse celebrates coordinated military success by siblings — one striking east, the other west, both victorious, both rewarded with territory. From The Gentle to Increase, wind and thunder reinforce each other: the gentleman sees good and moves toward it, sees error and corrects it. The brothers' pincer strategy embodies Increase's dynamic of mutual support. When wind above energizes the thunder below, and both move in complementary directions, the result is not merely addition but synergistic multiplication of strength.
