Yilin Verse
天地閉塞,仁智隱伏,商旅不行,利潤難得。
Heaven and earth are sealed shut; the wise and virtuous hide away. Merchants and travelers do not move; profit is hard to come by.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind and thunder bestow increase, but the transformation leads to doubled wind — the penetrating persistence of the Gentle, here experienced as paralysis. Heaven and earth are sealed shut; the wise and benevolent conceal themselves. Merchants and travelers cannot move; profit is impossible to obtain. The language directly echoes the I-Ching's description of hexagram Pi (Standstill): 'Heaven and earth do not interact; the myriad things do not communicate.' Commerce halts, wisdom hides, and every channel of exchange closes. From Increase to the Gentle, the irony cuts deep: doubled wind should penetrate everywhere, carrying commands to the four quarters. Yet when heaven and earth have shut their gates, even the most persistent wind finds nothing to move through. Increase is rendered meaningless when all circulation has ceased.
