Yilin Verse

天陰霖雨,塗行泥潦。商人休止,市无所有。

Heaven overcast, long rain falls; roads become rivers of mud. Merchants cease their trade; the market has nothing.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind upon wind transforms into thunder over fire: the Gentle becomes Abundance. The sky is overcast with lingering rain; roads are mired in mud and standing water. Merchants halt their business; the market has nothing for sale. The verse depicts an economy paralyzed by weather — endless rain turning roads to swamp, commerce suspended, stalls empty. From The Gentle to Abundance, the irony is pronounced. Thunder and lightning together should mean fullness at its peak, the brilliant flash of maximum prosperity. Yet here the abundance is of rain, not of goods. The market that should overflow with trade stands vacant. Wind has brought clouds instead of customers. Abundance misapplied — too much of the wrong thing — creates desolation rather than plenty.
