Yilin Verse

禹將為君,裝入崑崙。稍進陽光,登見溫湯。功德昭明。

Yu shall become sovereign; he enters into Kunlun. Gradually advancing in sunlight; ascending to see the warm springs. Merit and virtue shine bright.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind upon wind transforms into water over fire: the Gentle becomes After Completion. Yu is about to become sovereign; in his royal vestments he enters the Kunlun Mountains. Gradually advancing into sunlight, he ascends to discover the hot springs. His merit and virtue shine forth in brilliance. The verse narrates Yu the Great's apotheosis: the flood-tamer who earned heaven's mandate now enters the cosmic mountain Kunlun, axis of the world, and emerges into transcendent warmth and light. From The Gentle to After Completion, water sits properly above fire — everything in its place, the work accomplished. Yu's entry into Kunlun marks the moment when all labors culminate. The hot springs on the sacred mountain confirm heaven's approval: warmth rising from the earth to meet the new king, a cosmos perfectly ordered.
