Yilin Verse
葛生衍蔓,絺綌為願。家道篤厚,父兄悅喜。
Kudzu grows and spreads its vines; fine summer cloth is the wish. The household way is rich and sincere; father and elder brother rejoice.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Paired lakes nourish the vine that spreads across the earth — the image of Modesty, where the mountain hides within the ground. Kudzu vines trail and ramble; from them, fine cloth is woven to fulfill the household's wish. The family thrives in honest abundance, and father and elder brother rejoice. The Shijing ode 'Ge Tan' celebrates women gathering kudzu to weave summer garments, a symbol of domestic industry and contentment. From The Joyous to Modesty, delight roots itself in simple, productive virtue. The mountain concealed beneath earth is wealth that does not flaunt itself — a household whose prosperity grows from steady labor rather than display.
