Yilin Verse

秋南春北,隨時休息。處和履中,安无憂凶。

South in autumn, north in spring, resting according to the season. Dwelling in harmony, treading the center; peaceful, without worry or misfortune.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Paired lakes settle into the rhythm of heaven held within the mountain — Great Taming, where accumulated wisdom restrains and enriches. Autumn south, spring north: one migrates with the seasons, resting at the proper time. Dwelling in harmony and treading the middle way, there is peace without misfortune. The verse describes the disciplined traveler who follows nature's calendar rather than fighting it. From The Joyous to Great Taming, spontaneous joy is channeled into the patience of long cultivation. The mountain holds heaven within — vast potential stored through knowledge of when to move and when to rest. Seasonal rhythm is itself a form of taming.
