Yilin Verse
白茅縮酒,靈巫拜禱。神嗜飲食,使君壽考。
White cogon grass strains the wine; the spirit medium bows and prays. The spirits savor food and drink, granting the lord long life.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Paired lakes rest upon the mountain — Influence, where lake above and mountain below create mutual responsiveness. White rushes filter the sacrificial wine; the spirit-medium kneels and prays. The spirits savor the offerings, and the lord is granted long life. Filtering wine through white reeds was an ancient ritual practice mentioned in the Zuo Zhuan as a hallmark of proper sacrifice. From The Joyous to Influence, communal delight becomes sacred resonance. The lake atop the mountain draws moisture upward, just as sincere worship draws divine response downward. Joy offered through proper ritual channels creates the mutual attraction that is Influence — the spirits respond because the offering is genuine.
