Yilin Verse
祿如周公,建國洛東,父子俱封。
Emolument like the Duke of Zhou, founding a state east of Luo. Father and son both enfeoffed.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Paired lakes meet fire buried within the earth — Darkening of the Light, where brilliance is concealed for survival. Blessings like those of the Duke of Zhou, who founded a state east of Luo, where both father and son were enfeoffed. The Duke of Zhou built the eastern capital at Luoyi and was granted the fief of Lu, which his son Bo Qin governed. Despite his supreme loyalty and service, the Duke endured slander and suspicion before his virtue was vindicated. From The Joyous to Darkening of the Light, the verse suggests that true merit may be concealed yet still generates lasting prosperity. The light enters the earth not to perish but to sustain — as the Duke's legacy endured for centuries.
