Yilin Verse
秋蛇向穴,不失其節。夫人姜氏,自齊復入。
Migratory birds know autumn and return to the old forest; bees and butterflies recognize the flowers and come back to the garden. The traveler of a thousand li suddenly turns around — where cooking smoke rises, there is the family gate.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Paired lakes meet doubled wind — The Gentle, where persistent influence penetrates gradually. The original verse describes an autumn snake returning to its burrow, not losing its seasonal rhythm; Lady Jiang of Qi returns home from exile. The 'autumn snake toward the burrow' is a metaphor for instinctive return when the season demands it. The Lady Jiang reference may allude to a noblewoman from Qi who, after displacement, found her way back to her proper place. From The Joyous to The Gentle, delight transforms into the quiet, insistent force that restores things to their rightful position — like wind following wind, the command is given and carried out without drama.
