Yilin Verse

天成地安,積石為山。潤洽萬里,人賴其歡。

Heaven complete, earth at peace; piled stones form a mountain. Moisture spreads for ten thousand miles; the people rely on this joy.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Paired lakes meet water above fire — After Completion, where every element finds its proper place. Heaven is accomplished and earth is settled; stones accumulate into mountains. Grace moistens ten thousand li, and the people rely upon this joy. The verse paints the rare image of perfect cosmic order: the world completed, blessings flowing outward in concentric waves. From The Joyous to After Completion, open delight achieves its final, stable configuration. Water sits upon fire in ideal balance — the pot simmers at the perfect temperature. Yet After Completion carries its own warning: the sage thinks of disaster and prepares for it even at the height of order. This peace is real but not eternal.
