Yilin Verse

奢淫愛嗇,神所不福。靈祗憑怒,鬼障其室。

Extravagance, excess, and miserly greed; the spirits grant no blessing. The gods rage in fury; ghosts haunt and obstruct the house.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Water over lake insists on proper measure, and this verse shows what happens when measure is perverted. Extravagance and miserliness coexist — the worst of both vices — and the spirits refuse their blessing. Angered deities lean in with menace, and ghosts barricade the household. The verse depicts a spiritual economy in disorder: resources squandered on indulgence while obligations to the divine go unmet. From Limitation to Approach, the transformation intensifies the confrontation. Earth over lake — the great power looming above — draws near to inspect and judge. Where Limitation merely sets standards, Approach actively enforces them. The spirits' fury is the cosmos approaching to correct what has gone wrong. Misapplied resources invite not distant disapproval but intimate, pressing divine wrath.
