Yilin Verse
德音孔博,升在王室。八極蒙祐,受其福祿。
Virtuous reputation spreads far; one rises to the royal court. The eight directions receive protection; blessings and prosperity are bestowed.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water over lake regulates through moderation, and this verse shows moderation bearing fruit at the highest level. A reputation for virtue spreads far and wide, ascending to the royal court itself. The eight directions receive heaven's shelter; blessings and emoluments are bestowed upon all. 'De yin kong bo' — a virtuous name vast in its reach — echoes the Shijing's praise of moral influence that resonates across the realm without force. From Limitation to Great Power, the transformation channels accumulated virtue into irresistible momentum. Thunder over heaven — energy that will not be contained, yet here it is energy earned through long discipline. Limitation's years of measured conduct become Great Power's thunderous emergence. The gentleman who treads only the path of propriety commands a force no wall can hold.
