Yilin Verse
蜩螗歡翹,草木嘉茂。百果蕃生,日益多有。
Cicadas sing and leap joyfully; grass and trees flourish in beauty. A hundred fruits grow abundant; increasing more each day.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind stirs above the lake, and the world bursts into abundance. Cicadas sing with lifted wings; grasses and trees flourish luxuriantly. A hundred fruits multiply; day by day there is more. The verse is pure summer vitality — insects chorus, vegetation riots, orchards swell. No crisis, no allusion, no complication; simply the natural world at its most generous. From Inner Truth to Following, sincerity at the center yields to thunder resting within the lake, energy held in seasonal rhythm. Following means aligning with the natural cycle: the cicadas do not choose to sing; they follow the season. Abundance here is not seized but received, the effortless harvest that comes when one's inner timing matches the world's.
