Yilin Verse
乘騮駕驪,遊至東齊。遭遇行旅,逆我以資,厚得利歸。
Riding chestnut and black horses; journeying to Eastern Qi. Meeting fellow travelers; they greet me with provisions. Richly I return with profit.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind stirs above the lake as one rides fine horses — a bay and a black — journeying east to Qi. Along the way, fellow travelers appear and offer generous provisions, and one returns home richly rewarded. The verse is a merchant's dream: a journey undertaken in good faith that meets unexpected generosity from strangers, multiplying the venture's returns. From Inner Truth to Approach, the lake's sincerity transforms into earth above the lake, the image of a great power drawing near with benevolent intent. The encounter with generous travelers embodies Approach's dynamic: abundance does not wait at the destination but comes to meet you on the road, attracted by the sincerity of your undertaking.
