Yilin Verse
執戈俱立,以備暴急;千人守門,因以益卑。終安何畏?
Grasping halberds, they stand as one, ready against sudden violence; a thousand men guard the gate, and through it their station grows humble. Yet in the end -- what is there to fear?
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Earth above the lake rises to wind above the lake — Inner Truth's penetrating sincerity. Guards stand together holding halberds, prepared against sudden violence. A thousand men defend the gate, yet through this very vigilance, humility increases. In the end there is peace — what is there to fear? The paradox is striking: massive defensive preparation produces not arrogance but modesty. The thousand-strong garrison does not swagger; instead, its very discipline cultivates the lowliness that ensures safety. From Approach to Inner Truth, the elder's authority transforms into trust that penetrates like wind across water. The guards' readiness creates the conditions for peace not through intimidation but through the inner truth of genuine preparedness — sincerity made visible in disciplined watchfulness.
