Yilin Verse
囁囁處懼,昧冥相摶。多言少實,語无成事。
Whispering in fear; confused in the darkness, grasping at each other. Many words, little substance; talk that accomplishes nothing.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind stirs above the lake, but only whispering fear and dark confusion. People grope and grapple in the murk. Many words, little substance; talk accomplishes nothing. The verse paints a world of noise without signal: fearful muttering, blind wrestling, promises that evaporate. From Inner Truth to Pushing Upward, sincerity should yield to wood growing steadily within the earth — the patient, methodical rise. Yet the verse shows the antithesis: no discipline, no rootedness, no slow accumulation. The whisperers cannot push upward because they have no foundation to grow from. Pushing Upward requires silence and depth; this verse offers only agitated chatter, the froth that rises but never solidifies into real ascent.
