Yilin Verse
百草嘉卉,萌芽將出。昆䖝扶戶,陽明得所。
A hundred grasses and fine plants, their shoots about to emerge. Insects crowd the doorways; the yang finds its rightful brightness and place.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wood grows within the earth, and a hundred grasses and fine herbs send forth their sprouts as the season turns. Insects stir at the doorway emerging from dormancy; the yang sun finds its proper place at last and warmth returns to the ground. The verse captures the exact moment of early spring germination: buried seeds crack the soil, dormant creatures awaken, and the returning light confirms that warmth has penetrated to the roots. Wind over lake, the image of Inner Truth, resonates with sincerity that reaches even pigs and fish in their depths. From Pushing Upward to Inner Truth, the organic ascent is validated at its most elemental level. The sprouting grass proves that growth is not forced but inherent — truth embedded in the seed itself.
