Yilin Verse

烏升鵲舉,照臨東海。厖降庭堅,為陶叔後。封於英六,福履綏厚。

Crow rises and magpie soars; illuminating the Eastern Sea. Pang descends to Tingjian; becoming Tao Shu's heir. Enfeoffed at Ying and Liu; blessings thick and lasting.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind stirs above the lake as crows rise and magpies soar, their radiance illuminating the eastern sea. Pang descends to Tingjian, becoming the ancestor of Tao Shu. His line is enfeoffed at Ying and Liu, and blessings accumulate richly. The verse traces a genealogy rooted in Gao Yao's descendants: Tingjian (庭堅) is identified with Gao Yao's son, and the fiefs of Ying and Liu were granted to Gao Yao's lineage. From Inner Truth to Small Taming, sincerity at the center releases into wind moving gently above heaven. The birds ascending eastward mirror a bloodline rising through generations — not by conquest but by the slow accumulation of virtue that wind over heaven refines into lasting influence.
