Yilin Verse

鬭龍股折,日遂不明。自外為主,弟伐其兄。

Fighting dragons, a leg broken; the sun thereafter grows dim. An outsider becomes master; brother attacks brother.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Water sits above fire, but the dragons have turned on each other. In the struggle, a thigh is broken; the sun itself grows dim. An outsider seizes the throne as master, and the younger brother attacks his elder. The battling dragons (鬭龍) recall the omen of dragons wrestling in a ruler's court — a sign of fraternal strife and dynastic collapse. The sun darkening signals the loss of legitimate authority. From After Completion to Fellowship, the orderly arrangement gives way to heaven joined with fire — a blaze that should unite but here illuminates fratricide. Fellowship demands that those within the same clan find common cause; this verse shows what happens when completion breeds rivalry instead, and brothers weaponize their shared inheritance.
