Yilin Verse
四目相望,稍近同光,並坐鼓簧。
Four eyes gaze upon each other; gradually drawing near, sharing the same light. Seated side by side, playing the mouth-organ together.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water sits above fire, and four eyes meet — two pairs of gazes gradually drawing closer until they share the same light, sitting side by side and playing the mouth organ together. The verse is a miniature love story told in three beats: first mutual recognition across distance, then convergence, then harmonious music. From After Completion to Opposition, fire-and-water balance yields to fire above the lake — two elements that by nature diverge. Yet Opposition's wisdom lies in finding unity within difference. The four eyes belong to two separate persons who remain distinct yet achieve harmony. The mouth organ's polyphonic reed-pipes produce beauty precisely because different notes sound simultaneously — agreement that does not require sameness.
