Yilin Verse
乘龍吐光,使暗後明。燎獵大得,六師以昌。
Riding the dragon that spits forth light, turning darkness into brightness. The torchlit hunt yields great success; the six armies thereby flourish.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water sits above fire, and a dragon rises breathing light, turning darkness into radiance. The great hunt yields a magnificent catch, and the six armies prosper. The dragon spewing luminance evokes the sovereign who illuminates his age — the Son of Heaven whose mandate shines forth. The six armies (六師) are the full military complement of a Zhou king, signifying royal power at its zenith. From After Completion to Waiting, fire-and-water equilibrium yields to water suspended above heaven — clouds gathering with promise. The completed order does not stagnate but pauses in confident anticipation, the dragon having risen, now poised above the clouds before its next descent.
