Yilin Verse
反孽難步,留不反舍。露宿澤陂,亡其襦袴。
Rebellion and calamity make walking hard; staying on, unable to return to shelter. Sleeping exposed by the marsh bank, losing coat and trousers.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water sits above fire, but rebellion makes every step treacherous. One cannot stay, yet returning home is equally impossible. Forced to sleep in the open by the marshland's edge, one loses even shirt and trousers. The verse depicts total dispossession: a fugitive stripped of shelter, direction, and clothing. From After Completion to the Arousing, fire-and-water balance gives way to doubled thunder — shock upon shock. The completed order has not merely ended but detonated, leaving the person exposed and disoriented in the aftermath. The Arousing's thunder startles one into motion, but here there is nowhere to go. Each thunderclap strips away another layer of security until nothing remains but the bare body in the open air.
