Yilin Verse
崔嵬北嶽,天神貴客。溫仁正直,主布恩德。衣冠不已,蒙受大福。
Lofty Mount Heng of the north; where heavenly spirits are honored guests. Warm, benevolent, upright, and just; the lord spreads grace and virtue. Robes and crowns without end; great blessings are received.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Fire above water, and the sacred mountain receives its honored guest. Lofty Mount Heng of the north — seat of celestial spirits and noble visitors. Warm, benevolent, upright, and just, the presiding power bestows virtue and grace. Robes and caps are donned without cease, and great blessings descend. The northern sacred mountain (北嶽) was one of the Five Sacred Peaks, associated with winter, endurance, and celestial communication. From Before Completion to Abundance, fire-over-water transforms into thunder and lightning arriving together — the fullest expression of simultaneous illumination and power. Abundance is the hexagram of the zenith, the meridian moment when everything is at maximum. The verse dresses the mountain in ceremonial splendor, matching Abundance's image of a ruler at the height of his brilliance.
