Yilin Verse

喁喁嘉草,思降甘雨。景風升上,沾洽時澍,生我禾稼。

Whispering, the fair grasses long for sweet rain to descend. The warm wind rises upward; timely showers soak and nourish, bringing forth our grain and millet.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder and fire illuminate Abundance, and the verse closes with a vision of longed-for rain. The grasses murmur, yearning for sweet rain to descend. The warm south wind rises, and timely showers soak the earth, nourishing grain and millet. The 'Jingfeng' (景風) is the warm southerly wind associated with summer's peak — the very wind that drives the growing season. Its rising signals that the cosmic mechanism is working: warmth lifts moisture, clouds form, and rain arrives exactly when needed. From Abundance to Before Completion, fire above water: the cycle is not yet closed, but all the elements are in motion. Before Completion's promise is that the final crossing remains ahead — the rain has fallen, the grain is growing, but the harvest is still to come.
