Yilin Verse
戴堯扶禹,從喬彭祖。西遇王母,道路夷易,無敢難者。
Upholding Yao, supporting Yu; following Qiao and Peng Zu. Meeting the Queen Mother in the west; the road is smooth and easy, none dare make it difficult.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water hidden within the earth reverently upholds the sages, and the verse invokes a constellation of sacred protectors. Bearing Yao's wisdom and supporting Yu's labor, following the immortals Chisongzi and Pengzu in longevity, one journeys westward to meet the Queen Mother of the West. The road lies smooth and easy; no one dares oppose the traveler. This is a vision of cosmic safe-conduct: under the combined patronage of sage-kings and immortals, all obstacles dissolve. From The Army to The Clinging, doubled fire illuminates the four directions. The army's hidden water is transmuted into radiant clarity — earthly force ascending into the luminous company of heaven's brightest exemplars.
