Yilin Verse

依天倚地,凶危不至。上清下淨,受福大明,君受其利。

Relying on heaven, leaning on earth; danger and peril do not come. Above clear, below pure; receiving great and brilliant blessings -- the lord gains the advantage.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Water hidden within the earth is backed by heaven and grounded in the land, and no danger dares approach. Leaning on heaven and resting on earth, above is clear and below is clean; one receives great illumination as blessing, and the ruler profits from this alignment. The verse describes perfect vertical integration: cosmic support flows from the highest to the lowest without obstruction. From The Army to Progress, fire rises above the earth as the sun at dawn. The army's hidden water gives way to ascending light — a commander whose clarity of purpose illuminates everything beneath. What was discipline becomes radiance; what was order becomes visible virtue shining outward.
