Commentary
Water hidden within the earth gazes upward at towering peaks, and the lofty northern sacred mountain receives celestial guests of noble rank. Robes and ceremonial caps are donned without end as heavenly favor descends layer upon layer. The verse evokes an imperial feng-shan sacrifice at the sacred mountain — the ritual by which rulers commune with heaven atop the most sacred peaks. Constant donning of ceremonial dress signals continuous blessing rather than a single event. From The Army to Abundance, thunder and lightning arrive together in overwhelming fullness. The army's disciplined reverence at the sacred mountain is rewarded with thunder's judicial power and lightning's brilliant illumination — divine mandate at its most spectacular.
