Yilin Verse
登崑崙,入天門。過糟丘,宿玉泉。問惠觀,見仁君。
Ascending Kunlun, entering heaven is gate. Passing the mound of lees, lodging at the Jade Spring. Visiting the Pavilion of Grace; meeting the benevolent lord.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water upon earth opens a path to the mythical heights. The traveler ascends Kunlun, enters the Gate of Heaven, passes the Mound of Dregs, and lodges at the Jade Spring. At the Hall of Benevolent Wisdom, a humane sovereign is found. This is the journey to the Queen Mother of the West's domain — the axis mundi where mortals meet immortals. Kunlun, the celestial mountain above the Weak Water, represents the ultimate destination of spiritual pilgrimage. From Holding Together to Coming to Meet, heaven spreads wind beneath it as a decree reaches the four quarters. Gou's unexpected encounter mirrors the verse: the traveler does not seek the divine lord — the path itself delivers the meeting, natural as wind beneath heaven.
