水洊至，獵人之逐偏離正途。求鹿過山，與利為怨——所求之物反成怨恨之源。闇聾不言，誰知其中有何歡樂？此詩寫追逐致盲：專注於獵物而所有知覺關閉，聽不見、看不見、說不出，歡樂本身亦不可辨識。從坎至小過（山上有雷），鳥不宜上而宜下——小者不可高飛。超越本分之追逐恰恰產生此果：感官封閉，獲而無喜。行過乎恭、用過乎儉，方為小過之正道。
