山上有木為漸,澤上有地為臨。禹作神鼎,伯益銜指痛惜。斧斤折斷,獨柱傾倚,賣萬不售,枯槁為禍。傳說禹欲禪位於伯益,然禹子啟奪位,開世襲之制。伯益之痛在於循序漸進之預備遭突變推翻:工具已折,柱無所依,貨無人購。從漸至臨(教思無窮),漸進之修為在接近權力時發現:僅有德才不足以立足。臨之「容保民無疆」須有時勢之配合,否則孤柱獨立,終歸傾覆。
