山上有火，蜲蛇（大蛇）四壯——或喻國事之擴張蔓延。旅人心念父母卻不得歸。「王事靡盬，不我安處」——引《詩經·小雅》之語：王事無止，不令我安居。征夫遠行，無暇奉養雙親。從旅至漸（山上有木），木漸長於山上，緩慢而穩。然旅人不能享此從容——國事不斷將其連根拔起。漸之耐心為國之貪求所嘲弄：每當將要安定，又被徵調遠方。
