The owl breaks the axe; the people are in peril. By virtue of loyal integrity, disaster turns to blessing; the tottering is set upright again.

地勢坤，厚德載物。鴟鴞破斧，邦人危殆——鴟鴞毀壞斧斤，國人陷於危難。賴其忠德，轉禍為福，傾危復立——幸賴忠臣之德，禍轉為福，傾覆之國重新站立。鴟鴞出《詩經·豳風·鴟鴞》，周公所作，以鴟鴞奪巢喻三監叛亂威脅周室。周公攝政平亂，以忠德保全幼年之周朝。從坤至遯（天下有山），大地之承載化為進退之智：遯者，君子以遠小人，不惡而嚴。周公之偉大在於知何時堅守、何時退讓——其忠德即退中之守，危中之立。
