水洊至，坎之重險，寒氣凝降，萬物冰封。寒露降而凌制為堅冰——草木瘡傷，花落葉亡，植物世界滿目瘡痍。此詩寫純然之時令災厄：秋霜肅殺，生機盡滅。從坎至解（雷雨作，君子以赦過宥罪），雷雨當至以解困——暴風驟雨洗盡沉鬱。然此詩寫解之前夜：毀滅已極而紓解未現。霜須完成其功，春之雷雨方能復甦所凍之物。解需冬盡其程方至。
