The Marquis of Cai pays court at Chu, lingering long upon the river shore. Months pass beyond the appointed time; he thinks of his lord and queen.

木上有火，鼎之象。蔡侯朝楚——蔡昭侯入楚朝覲。留連江渚——被留滯於江邊。踰時歷月——超過預定之期，月復一月。思其君后——思念本國之君后。蔡昭侯訪楚，因不肯以裘衣贈令尹子常而被扣留，客居異地，歸期無望。從鼎至小過（山上有雷），小過為小有過度之卦。雷在山上——微小的越界引發不成比例之後果。鼎之賓客化為階下囚，只因禮數稍有過失。小過之戒：行過乎恭——過度之處即在毫釐之間。
