Yilin Verse

舜升大禹,石夷之野。徵詣王庭,并治水土。

Shun elevated Great Yu in the wilderness of Shiyi. Summoning him to the royal court, together they tamed the waters and the earth.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Emperor Shun elevates Yu the Great, sending him to the stony wilderness. Summoned to the royal court, he is charged with governing the waters and the land together. This is the paradigmatic act of Inner Truth: Shun's trust in Yu was vindicated by Yu's thirteen years of tireless flood control, during which he passed his own door three times without entering. From Creative to Inner Truth, wind blows above the lake — sincerity that moves even pigs and fishes. The verse captures Zhong Fu's essence: the sovereign's faith in an untested minister, and the minister's faithful response that saved the world. Trust offered and trust honored — the wind stirring the lake's surface without coercion.
