Yilin Verse
黃虹之野,賢君所在。管仲為相,國无災咎。
Yellow rainbow over the wilds; here dwells the worthy lord. Guan Zhong serves as minister; the state knows no calamity.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind stirs above the lake, and inner truth radiates outward. A yellow rainbow arches over the wilderness — an auspicious sign marking a worthy ruler's domain. Guan Zhong serves as prime minister, and the state is spared all calamity. The yellow rainbow was an omen of harmonious governance in Han cosmology, while Guan Zhong's stewardship of Qi under Duke Huan brought order and hegemony without conquest. From Inner Truth to the Creative, the lake's gentle sincerity transforms into heaven's self-generating vigor. Authentic conviction at the center, once given full expression, becomes sovereign initiative — not forced but arising naturally, the way a competent minister's integrity radiates outward as national strength.
