Yilin Verse

三女為姦,俱遊高園;倍室夜行,與伯笑言。不忍主母,失禮酒冤,皇天誰告。

Three women plotting mischief, all roaming the high garden. Leaving their chambers to walk by night; with the elder brother, laughing and talking. Unable to face the lady of the house; rites abandoned, wine-soured grievance -- to whom in heaven can one appeal?

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven above the lake, but the household order has dissolved in darkness. Three women conspire together, wandering the high garden by night. They leave the inner chambers for nocturnal excursions, laughing and whispering with their lord. The mistress of the house is not respected; propriety collapses under wine and resentment, and there is no heaven to hear the appeal. The verse depicts a domestic scandal: concubines usurping the wife's authority, revelry replacing ritual, and the wronged party left without recourse. From Treading to After Completion, water rests perfectly above fire in balanced equilibrium. The irony cuts deep — the household that should have achieved completion instead drowns in disorder.
