Yilin Verse

乾行天德,覆幬無極;嘔呼烹熟,使各自得。

Qian moves with heaven's virtue; its canopy covers without limit. Nurturing and ripening all things; each finds its proper place.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Heaven moves with supreme virtue, its canopy sheltering all things without limit. With patient care it tends and ripens each creature, letting everything find its proper place. The verse evokes a cosmic kitchen: the sounds of cooking and calling — the universe as nourishing cauldron, each being brought to its natural fulfillment. From Great Possession to Standstill, fire over heaven transforms into heaven and earth failing to communicate. Yet the verse itself describes perfect governance, suggesting that the ideal state described here is precisely what Standstill threatens. The counsel reads as: remember this vision of universal nourishment, for when heaven and earth cease to interact, the sage must hold to frugal virtue and refuse the lure of emolument.
