Yilin Verse

昊天白日,照臨我國;萬民康寧,咸賴嘉福。

Vast heaven, white sun; it shines upon our realm. All people are healthy and peaceful; all rely on this fine blessing.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

The vast heaven and bright sun shine down upon our realm. The myriad people rest in peace and health, all sustained by excellent blessings. The image is of cosmic beneficence: the great sky and white sun irradiate the land with impartial brightness. From Great Possession to Decrease, fire above heaven becomes mountain above lake — the image of restraining anger and limiting desire. The pairing seems paradoxical: universal blessing meets voluntary diminishment. But Decrease's deeper teaching is that the upper gives to enrich the lower. The sunlight that blesses the people is itself a form of Decrease from heaven's perspective — radiance poured out, not hoarded. True abundance is realized through generous distribution, and the nation thrives because heaven withholds nothing.
