Yilin Verse

左眇右盲,視闇不明;下民多孽,君失其常。

Left eye dim, right eye blind; vision clouded, sight unclear. Below, the common people breed trouble; the lord has lost his constant way.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

The left eye is dim, the right is blind — vision fails and darkness cannot be distinguished from light. The common people multiply their transgressions, and the ruler loses his constancy. The verse diagnoses political blindness from the top: a sovereign who cannot see clearly presides over a people who run wild. The paired impairments suggest not total darkness but distorted, unreliable perception. From Great Possession to Increase, fire above heaven becomes wind and thunder — the image of moral improvement, where the superior man corrects his faults upon seeing good. The verse is Increase's dark mirror: when the ruler's sight is impaired, the improvement mechanism fails. Instead of moving toward the good, the whole system drifts into transgression. The remedy Increase offers — seeing good and moving toward it — requires eyes that work.
