Yilin Verse
一婦六夫,亂擾不治。張王季疾,莫適為公。政道壅塞,周君失邦。
One woman and six husbands, disorder and turmoil beyond remedy. Zhang, Wang, and Ji all ail; none is fit to govern. The way of governance is blocked; the lord of Zhou loses his domain.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind and thunder bestow increase, but the transformation leads to fire blazing above heaven — the magnificent potential of Great Possession, here squandered. One wife and six husbands create disorder beyond remedy. The lords Zhang and Wang fall ill in succession; none can serve as the legitimate authority. The channels of governance are blocked, and the Zhou ruler loses his domain. The 'one wife, six husbands' is a metaphor for multiple claimants to a single seat of power, each undermining the others. When succession is contested and no clear mandate exists, even abundant resources produce only chaos. From Increase to Great Possession, the irony is stark: fire in heaven should illuminate all, yet without a single legitimate holder, great wealth and power become instruments of mutual destruction.
