Yilin Verse
與福俱坐,畜水備火;思患豫防,終無殃禍。
Sitting with blessing; storing water, guarding against fire. Thinking of danger and preparing in advance; to the end, no disaster or calamity.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Sitting together with blessings, one stores water and prepares against fire. Anticipating trouble and guarding against it in advance, one passes through life without calamity. The verse echoes the I-Ching's own Ji Ji hexagram text almost verbatim, applying it here as practical wisdom: the prepared person coexists with good fortune precisely because they never take it for granted. Water stored against fire is the most fundamental form of foresight. From Great Possession to Limitation, fire above heaven becomes water above lake — measured containment. Limitation's teaching is about establishing proper boundaries, and the verse shows what this looks like in practice: one sits with abundance but keeps water at hand, never trusting the fire not to turn.
