Yilin Verse
畏昏不行,待旦昭明。燎獵受福,老賴其慶。
Fearing the darkness, one does not travel; waiting for dawn's bright clarity. Through the torchlit hunt, blessings are received; in old age, one enjoys this fortune.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Water over lake counsels patience, and this verse heeds that counsel. Fearing the darkness, one does not travel at night but waits for the brightness of dawn. Then comes a grand hunt with torchlight — the liao hunt, an ancient royal rite — and blessings are received. Even the aged share in the celebration. The sequence is deliberate: restraint in darkness, action in light, reward in season. From Limitation to Great Possession, the transformation traces how disciplined waiting yields magnificent abundance. Fire blazes in heaven, illuminating all below. The one who refused to stumble through darkness now stands in full daylight, possessing everything the premature traveler would have lost. Limitation's patience becomes Great Possession's radiant harvest.
