Yilin Verse

視曰再光,與天相望;長牛懽悅,以福為多。

Gazing, the sun shines twice as bright; exchanging looks with heaven. The great ox is joyful and pleased; blessings are deemed plentiful.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

The gaze is doubly bright, surveying as far as heaven's expanse. The great ox lows in contentment, counting its blessings as many. The verse pairs cosmic vision with pastoral satisfaction, creating an image of abundance viewed and enjoyed from the widest possible perspective. From Great Possession to Small Exceeding, fire above heaven becomes thunder above mountain — the small bird that should not fly too high. Small Exceeding counsels restraint and downward attention, and the verse fits this subtly: the doubled brightness does not reach for more but simply surveys what is, and the contented ox does not strain upward but rests in its plenty. Abundance properly experienced through modesty and presence — this is Small Exceeding's gift to Great Possession.
