Yilin Verse

据斗運樞,順天無憂,與天並居。

Grasping the Dipper, turning the Pole; following heaven, free of worry. Dwelling alongside heaven itself.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth holds the mountain below, and now the gaze rises to the cosmic pivot. Grasping the Dipper and rotating the celestial axis, one follows heaven and knows no sorrow, dwelling alongside heaven itself. The Big Dipper's handle was understood in Han cosmology as the cosmic clock, its rotation marking the seasons and establishing order. From Modesty to Contemplation, wind blows across the earth — the sage-king's survey of his realm. The verse captures Contemplation's highest register: the ruler who has aligned with the celestial mechanism no longer acts from personal will but from cosmic attunement. Modesty's buried mountain becomes the stable axis around which heaven turns, and the contemplative one who grasps it shares heaven's peace.
