Lady Li slandered and schemed, plotting with the two wicked ones. She maligned the dutiful prince, harming the loyal and filial. But the carriage departed through the fine gate -- the merchant lord found joy.

Commentary
Thunder rests within the lake, and Lady Li schemes with her two accomplices. The scheming consort of Duke Xian of Jin slandered Crown Prince Shensheng, driving him to suicide, and forced the princes Chong Er and Yiwu into exile. The verse names her dark arts: 'playful slander with her two villains,' pecking at the dutiful prince like a venomous bird, destroying loyalty and filial piety. Yet the poem pivots — the carriage exits through the auspicious gate, and the 'Lord of Shang' finds joy. This may allude to Chong Er's eventual triumphant return as Duke Wen of Jin. From Following to the Arousing, doubled thunder shakes the world. The exile's endurance under Lady Li's persecution becomes the tremor that eventually restores him to power.
