Yilin Verse
江河淮海,天之奧府。眾利所聚,可以富有,好樂喜友。
Rivers, streams, the Huai, the sea — heaven's deep storehouse. Where all profits gather; one may grow wealthy therein, delighting in friendship and joy.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder doubled meets lake over thunder: shock finds companionship in following. Rivers, streams, the Huai, the sea — these are heaven's hidden storehouses. Where all profit gathers, one may grow wealthy; there is friendship and shared delight. The great waterways of ancient China — the Yangtze, Yellow River, Huai, and sea — represented both natural abundance and commercial networks. The verse celebrates the convergence of resources as a source of joy and community. From The Arousing to Following, thunder rests beneath the lake, yielding initiative for a season. The dynamic reverses: instead of asserting, one goes where the current leads. Wealth accumulates not through force but through the receptivity of following natural flows to their gathering point.
