Yilin Verse

潼滃蔚薈,扶首來會。津液來降,流淹滂霈。

Thick and billowing, lush and dense; gathering with heads bowed. Moisture descends from above; flowing, drenching, soaking in abundance.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Earth upon earth transforms into fire above mountain — the Wanderer. Vapors rise thick and lush, gathering together in abundance. Moisture descends from above, flowing in heavy, soaking rain. Fire atop the mountain, the image of Lu, shows a blaze on the heights — transient, exposed, moving on. Yet the verse evokes not wandering but condensation: mist coalescing, fluids accumulating, rain pouring down. From the Receptive to the Wanderer, the earth's moisture is drawn upward and then released, traveling across the sky before falling far from where it rose. The verse captures the Wanderer's paradox: the water cycle is perpetual motion — nothing stays, nothing is lost. What departs from the earth returns to the earth, but always to a different place.
